Popular ones are listed below:
Deep Tissue is a generic term used to target the deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue. The massage therapist uses different techniques - such as slower strokes or friction across the grain of the muscle. In laymen's term, the therapist is trying to break the stuck-together muscle fibers that interferes with your movement. Deep Tissue is not the same as deep pressure(refers to level of pressure). Deep tissue massage is used for repetitive strain, posture problems, chronically tight muscles, recovery from injury. People often may feel sore for one to two days after deep tissue massage.
Swedish Massage (also known as Relaxation or Classic Massage)
The most common form of massage that uses the basic massage techniques(effleurage(gliding strokes), petrissage(kneading), friction, vibration and tapotement(tapping) and always in the direction of blood flow to the heart to help relax your muscles and body tissues and to promote a sense of well-being.
Hot heated smooth stones, often used with oils, are pressed on a person's body to help relax the muscle.
Trigger point is that hyper-irritable area in a muscle that often feels like knobby hard spot or taut band. When applying pressure on trigger points, a person feels pain or sensation somewhere else. Trigger points refer weakness or pain to other areas of muscle tissue. Compression pumping pressure is applied to trigger points to flushes out toxins to relieve tensions. Trigger point massage therapy is used to treat painful trigger points that cause referred pain. Please note the muscles involve may have taken a long time to be in that condition, and it will likely take more therapy to treat it. Communicate to your massage therapist about discomfort or pain you may experience when the TP technique is used because the technique can be uncomfortable. For example, trigger point in trapezius muscle can cause headaches or the trigger point in your abdominal muscles can cause low back ache and pain. TP therapy can be used to relieve muscle tension in sports injuries, back pain, frozen shoulder, sciatica syndrome, shin splints, neck stiffness and more.
Myofascial Release
Myofascial release (Myo is a muscle, fascia is a tough tissue that covers the muscle) is a technique to stretch and release restricted and tight area to relieve pain.
Sports Massage
Application of tailored-made massage techniques that may combine different elements of Swedish, Trigger Point therapy in combo with Shiatsu and stretching targeting the specific goal of the athlete. There are three main key to know in sports massage:
timing(when-Is the athlete in pre-event, maintenance, post event, injury phase, recovery phase) technique(what -technique would you use such as stretching, shaking, compression) and
intent(why -are you using the treatment: to increase flexibility, to improve blood flow).
Sports massage can prep the athlete for peak performance, prevents injuries, helps heal damaged tissue. For serious athlete, sports massage is a must have part of your training regimen. If you are not an athlete, a sports massage may still be helpful in the relief of tension, muscle soreness, joint pain, back pain, muscle spasms and general soreness or fatigue.
Shiatsu ("Shi" is finger, "atsu" is pressure) is a type of bodywork developed in Japan that focuses on pressure points by use of fingers instead of needles such as acupuncture. It combines the rotation and stretching of joints to unblock channels of energy.
